Broken Shadows

Lurking in corners
Dancing on walls
Just outside your field of vision
Harmless at morning
Long and menacing in the afternoon
and disjointed
Demanding your attention

Spilling across walkways
Following along darkening streets
Beyond the realm of validity
Solid and real in the light of day
Dissipating as the sun and moon trade off
and surreal
Nightmares in the making

and deformed
The outline of life itself
on a late afternoon
Black as midnight
and dark as a narcissistic heart
Falling into yesterday
and stretching into tomorrow
Yet somehow whole
Facing another twilight
as shadows grow long
