“Look, if you had one shot or one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted; one moment. Would you capture it, or just let it slip?”
Those words, from Eminem’s smash hit “Lose Yourself,” can be applied to nearly any point in life when the time has come to put up or shut up. There are moments in time where the ultimate prize is there for the taking, waiting for you to overcome the last obstacle and claim it as your own. Such a moment has arrived for the participants in this year’s Maxwell Brothers Bowl Prediction Spectacular (MBBPS).
When last we spoke I held the lead in this year’s bowl prediction spectacular, though by the slightest of possible margins. Since that time, things have grown closer still. As we prepare for the season ending National Championship game, one final update on the bowl season so far:
As of my last post, we were awaiting the outcome of the final two non-championship bowl games in order to ascertain just where we stood heading into the final throwdown. In the Birmigham Bowl, a Florida team that had struggled for much of the season rose up (well, maybe not) and took care of East Carolina by a final score of 28-20. Since Matt and I both picked Florida to win, this one was of little consequence to us.
On the other hand, the GoDaddy Bowl meant everything (isn’t that just about the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever heard?). In a showdown only graduates of the respective schools could love, Arkansas State took on Toledo in a game that could have wrapped up an MBBPS win for me.
As you can probably guess, it didn’t. Instead my pick, Arkansas State elected not to bring its defense on the bowl trip. I say this because the Red Wolves allowed Toledo (Matt’s pick) to score 63 points. 63 points! Surely, you say, the game was a complete blowout. The Rockets probably ran away with it. Well, they would have, had Arkansas State not put up 44 points of its own. The two teams combined for 107 points. There were NCAA basketball games played that day in which fewer points were scored. I know, I checked.
So it has come down to this: one final game for all the marbles. When the Oregon Ducks face the Ohio State Buckeyes on January 12, there will be more than a championship at stake. Matt and I currently find ourselves locked in a 21-21 tie, and eternal glory rides on Monday night’s outcome. Well, maybe just one year of glory. Then again, maybe just one year of bragging rights. But either way, we’ll know how it all turns out soon.
Our live look in update will be short and sweet today, as there were only two games. I watched the majority of the Birmingham Bowl on Saturday, Januray 3, and then stayed awake long enough to catch the first half of the GoDaddy Bowl on Sunday, January 4. That means I’ve managed to watch at least a quarter of all 38 bowl games so far. And there is no way I’m missing number 39.
That does it for now. When the participants take the field on Monday night, I’ll be riding with Oregon, while Matt has put his faith in Ohio State. We’ll have one final posting on this year’s MBBPS following the championship game, so be on the lookout for it. For a rundown on how we got here, and our current standings, check out the chart below.
As always, thanks for reading. See you in a couple of days!
