Happy New Year to all!
Heading into this week, I’d taken control in the MBBPS (Maxwell Brothers Bowl Prediction Spectacular, for those not in the know). I was red hot, having correctly picked the winning team in six consecutive bowl games to move ahead in our overall standings. I was feeling good about my chances and congratulating myself on my vast understanding of the mindset of large groups of twenty-year old athletes right up until Monday afternoon, when it all began to fall apart.
Over the next three days, I correctly predicted just 4 of 9 games. My winners included Arkansas, Georgia (go Dawgs!), Stanford, and Georgia Tech (a pick over which I still feel supremely dirty), while my losses included Oklahoma’s miserable performance (damn you Bob Stoops!) and Mississippi’s epic failure in the Peach Bowl.
Matt, on the other hand caught fire. After missing on his first pick (West Virginia), he then correctly predicted seven in a row, including wins by Clemson, Notre Dame, Georgia (again, go Dawgs!), TCU, and Boise State. Despite a loss in the final game of 2014, he ended the three day period with a 7-2 record. Oh how quickly fortunes can rise and fall in the world of the MBBPS!
In our overall standings, Matt’s hot streak moved him into the lead, though what a narrow lead it is. Through the first twenty seven bowl games of the season, Matt has predicted 16 winners, while I currently stand at 15. As always, the margin for error is virtually nonexistant.
For our live look in update, I’ve somehow managed to continue my streak of watching a least some of each game. On Monday, I made it home from work just in time to watch the final 11:00 of the Liberty Bowl, caught the first quarter and a half of the Russell Athletic Bowl, and then was in and out during the first half of the Texas Bowl.
On Tuesday, I once again made it home just in time to watch the fourth quarter of a game, this time the Music City Bowl. I then settled in to watch our featured game of the week, the Belk Bowl, in which my beloved Georgia Bulldogs destroyed coach Pigface Petrino and the Louisville Cardinals behind an incredible 266 yards and two touchdowns by super freshman running back Nick Chubb. After Georgia’s 37-14 win, I stayed up long enough to watch the first quarter of the Foster Farms Bowl before going to bed with a smile on my face.
Wednesday nearly derailed me, as I didn’t get off of work until 3:30pm, which was a problem since the Peach Bowl began at noon. Fortunately, I’d remembered to set my trusty DVR! I listened to the final 12 minutes on the radio, then watched the first half on the recording. I then watched the first half of the Fiesta Bowl, and then parts of the final three quarters of the Orange Bowl to close out the year.
That’s it for now. A smorgasbord of bowl games awaits us college football junkies later today. As always, I’ll be watching. Check out the chart below for our overall standings as we head into the home stretch. Again, happy New Year to everyone. May all your dreams come true in 2015!
